Cavendish Wins Stage 5 of Tour de France 2013

Mark Cavendish (Omega Pharma-Quick Step) has opened his account at this year’s Tour de France. The Manx missile took a crash-marred bunch sprint to win Stage 5 of the 2013 Tour, a flat, 228. 5-km run from Cagnes-sur-Mer to Marseille in 5:31:51. Edvald Boasson Hagen (Sky) took second, and Peter Sagan (Cannondale) finished third. Simon Gerrans (Orica-GreenEdge) remains the maillot jaune.

Editorial: Let Ted King Ride!

During the chaotic finish to Stage 1 of the Tour de France 2013, Ted King (Cannondale), who was riding his first Tour de France, crashed. Among other injuries, the American suffered a separated shoulder. Today, King rode Stage 4, a 25-km team time trial in Nice, using a regular road bike instead of his time trial bike because of the pain in his shoulder.

Orica-GreenEdge is the surprise winner of the 2013 Tour de France’s team time trial. The Australian squad, which furnished yesterday’s winner in the person of Simon Gerrans, powered over the flat, 25-km course in Nice in 25:56. World team time trial champion Omega Pharma-Quick Step finished second at 0:01, and Sky took third at 0:03. Gerrans is the new maillot jaune.

Orica-GreenEdge has won its first Tour de France stage. Simon Gerrans did the honors for the Australian squad, using a bike throw to pip Peter Sagan (Cannondale) and take Stage 3 of the Tour de France 2013, a hilly, 145.5-km ride from Ajaccio to Calvi, in 3:41:24. Jose Joaquin Rojas (Movistar) took third, and Jan Bakelants (RadioShack-Leopard) remains the maillot jaune.

The 27-year-old Belgian surged away from five companions in the last two km and held on to win Stage 2, a hilly, 156-km ride from Bastia to Ajaccio, Corsica in 3:43:11.
