Team Milram Continues The Ardennes Week in the Fleche Wallonne
Team Milram will be at the start of the Fleche Wallonne (UCI Category HIS) tomorrow for the second race of the Ardennes Classics triple. The German team will be led by Milram allrounder Fabian Wegmann. The German champion from 2007 and 2008 will be supported in the 195.5 kilometers from Charleroi to Huy by Germans Johannes Fröhlinger, Christian Knees, Ronny Scholz, and Paul Voß, as well as Slovak Peter Velits and Austrian Peter Wrolich. In addition, Wrolich's countryman Thomas Rohregger will make his return to racing after stomach problems, which have kept the 26-year-old out of competition since the 2009 Paris-Nice in the middle of March.
"If Fabian Wegmann is 100 percent healthy again, then he will clearly be our man for the race,“ said Gerry van Gerwen, Team MILRAM's General Manager. "In addition to Wegmann, Christian Knees has been our most constant rider this spring. We will concentrate on them. Linus Gerdemann won't start, he is fully concentrated on the 2009 Liege-Bastogne-Liege (Lüttich-Bastogne-Lüttich) this coming Sunday.“
The Fleche Wallone has been carried out in Belgium's Wallonian region since 1936 and is one of the important Spring Classics in cycling. The start of the challenging race in the hilly area of the Ardennes is in the city of Charleroi. The most important characterstic of the race's profile is in Huy. Shortly before the end of the race the riders must climb the so-called Wall of Huy (Mur de Huy), a difficult 1.3 km long climb, with an average gradient of 10% and a maximum of 19%. The "Mur“ is usually decisive in determining the outcome of the race.
In the long history of the Classic, Rolf Golz was the first German to win in 1988. Team Milram's Fabian Wegmann just missed the Top Ten twice, finished 11th in 2006 and 2007 while he was still riding for Team Gerolsteiner. Last year he finished 30th after serving as a helper for his now former captain Davide Rebellin, who finished sixth.
