Fabian Cancellara will defend his time trial title at cycling's road world championships in Australia next week - and choose a new team for 2011 when he returns.
Cancellara said Wednesday he had been unsure about traveling to Australia after a long season in which he won the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix spring classics, plus two stages of the Tour de France where he wore the leader's yellow jersey for six days.
"It was 50-50," Cancellara said before boarding a flight to Singapore on the first leg of his journey to the worlds staged in Geelong, outside Melbourne. "I told myself I needed a beautiful finish (to the season).
"I'm a professional and I really want to do my best over there."
The 29-year-old racer is also expected to compete for Switzerland in the 2010 World Championships road race.
Cancellara said his performances would not be affected by speculation over which team he will join next season, after buying out his contract with Danish team Saxo Bank last week.
"There are several teams who want my services. I'm going to wait until my return and calmly decide," he said.
Cancellara has been linked with the new Luxembourg-based team being created by his Saxo Bank teammates Andy and Frank Schleck; Swiss team BMC which includes road race world champion Cadel Evans; and the new Australian team Pegasus.
Cycling's most feared time trial rider has won three world titles since 2006, and gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Cancellara also earned a silver medal in the Olympic road race.
