Tour of California Stage 5

The doctors at a hospital in Antwerp have successfully performed surgery on Christian Vande Velde to repair the double fracture that Vande Velde sustained in stage three of the 2010 Giro d'Italia - the final of three stages ridden on the dangerous Dutch roads.

On his Twitter page Christian Vande Velde wrote "Surgery was a success. 8 screws and a plate, I am now bionic on both sides." No carbon clavicle implant though.

Before the surgery Vande Velde wrote: "The collarbone is in three pieces! Throwing a plate on that bad boy in a few hours. See you on the other side." We will Christian, we will.. Here's wishing you a speedy recovery.
