Alexandr Kolobnev Escapes Russian Ban for Tour de France Doping

The International Cycling Union (UCI) says Russian cycling officials do not intend to ban Alexandr Kolobnev over his failed doping test at the Tour de France.

The International Cycling Union (UCI) says Russian cycling officials do not intend to ban Alexandr Kolobnev over his failed doping test at the Tour de France.

The UCI says it received a decision from Russia on Thursday that "foresees a fine and a warning" for Kolobnev, who denies doping.

The UCI can request case files within 15 days, and has another month to appeal the Russian verdict at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Kolobnev, the 2008 Beijing Olympics bronze medalist, gave the only positive test at the Tour.

His urine sample from the fifth stage had traces of Hydrochlorothiazide, a diuretic which hides the presence of other drugs.

The Russian Katusha team withdrew the 30-year-old Kolobnev after the ninth stage of the Tour de France.
