Fabio Aru (Astana) has taken his second consecutive stage of the Giro d’Italia. Aru took the mountainous, 199-km ride from Saint-Vincent to Sestriere in 5:12:25. Ryder Hesjedal (Cannondale-Garmin) finished second at 0:18, and Rigoberto Uran (Etixx-Quick Step) took third at 0:24. Alberto Contador (Tinkoff-Saxo Bank) had a crisis on the day’s two climbs, but he kept his maglia rosa and is poised to win the race when it ends tomorrow in Turin.

The Italian, who has struggled at times in this Giro, surged away from the maglia rosa group with six km remaining to win the mountainous, 236-km ride from Gravellona Voce to Cervinia in 6:24:13. Sacha Modolo (Lampre-Merida) has won Stage 17 of this year’s Giro d’Italia. The Italian took a bunch sprint to the rolling, 134-km ride from Tirano, Italy to Lugano, Switzerland, in 3:07:51. Giacomo Nizzolo (Trek) finished second, and Luka Mezgec (Giant-Alpecin) finished third. Alberto Contador (Tinkoff-Saxo Bank) remains the maglia rosa.
