Giro d’Italia race organizer RCS Sport today announced its decision to shorten the stage 13 route notably due to adverse weather conditions that would risk compromising rider safety. 

Instead of the planned stage 13 route from Borgofranco d’Ivrea to Crans Montana, stage 13 of Giro d’Italia 2023 will now start at Le Chable and be just 74.6 kilometers short. The Giro riders will take the neutral start at the original start location, but then get into busses and be driven to Le Chable, where the actual official start will be given.

The stage will still conclude with the Crans Montana (Switzerland), but only the last part of the originally planned stage route would be contested. The Salita del Gran San Bernardo will not feature in today’s race and stage 13 now starts at 14:30 CET with an immediate climb up the Category 1 Croix de Coeur and concludes with the Category 1 Crans Montana climb.

The shortened stage will expectedly be intensely contested and feature fierce competition between the general classification favorites, while there is no possibility for a long breakaway to succeed.

Denmark’s Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo) – a favorite for the points classification win - will not start today’s stage as he has abandoned the race due to illness.
