Team Sky's Chris Sutton (Australia) won the semi-classic 2011 Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne in a mass sprint to the finish line, beating Yauheni Hutarovich of Belarus (Team FDJ) and Andy Greipel (Team Omega Pharma-Lotto) of Germany.
After the pack caught Team QuickStep's Tom Boonen of Belgium two miles from the finish line, the Sky team took charge and set up Sutton for one final burst of speed to take the race.
The 120-mile race was run in cold, windy and damp conditions and the pack crossed in a provisional 4 hours 39, minutes, 39 seconds. It was the biggest victory so far for the 26-year-old Australian.
"I only won today because of the work the team did for me, they made it possible. It just goes to show how important teamwork is. I didn't have to do anything. We had Hayman away as well as Stannard and Flecha. We had all these other options," Sutton commented after the race finish.
When asked if his Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne win is the biggest win of his career, Sutton told Roadcycling.com/Roadcycling.mobi "It's got to be right up there. Every win you have is special, but they are all different. My Tour Down Under stage win last year was special. It was back in Australia and in front of my family and friends. But to win a mini classic today! I'm just so thrilled and excited!"
