Fabian Cancellara Wins 2009 UCI Cycling World Championships Time Trial
On the three-lap circular route of 16,6 kilometers per lap in Mendrisio, Switzerland, home favorite, Fabian Cancellara demonstrated his incredible instinct for winning and not least his frantic pace abilities when he crushed all competition during the total distance of 49.8 kilometers. He crossed the finish line to take back his title from 2006 and 2007 in an epic demonstration of style and strength.
The strong Swiss shot through the streets of Mendrisio with an average speed of nearly 52 km/h cutting every corner possible and majestically lifting his arms into the air when crossing the finish line 01:27 minutes faster than his daily teammate from Team Saxo Bank, Sweden's Gustav Larsson in second place.
Gustav Erik Larsson completed an impressive time trial and conquered the silver medal by trying to keep up with Cancellara after Cancellara caught and passed him on the course.
“I was absolutely flying on home ground today and I was well aware that it was going to take some hard work to reach my goal so I started out the time trial with everything I had. I'm really glad to regain the World Cup jersey. I have been working hard to reach this condition and it is clear that I also have ambitions regarding the course on Sunday”, 2009 World Time Trial Champion Fabian Cancellara said with a sparkle in his eye.
German Tony Martin took third place and can carry a bronze medal with him when he returns to Germany.
