Martin Takes Criterium International Time Trial; Voigt Takes Overall

Tony Martin (Columbia)  has won Stage 3 of the Criterium International.

Tony Martin (Columbia)  has won Stage 3 of the Criterium International. Martin powered over the 8.3-km time trial course in Charleville-Mezieres to win in 10:05. Bradley Wiggins (Garmin) finished second at 10:05, and Frantisek Rabon (Columbia) took third at 0:08. Jens Voigt (Saxo Bank), who began the day as the overall leader, finished fifth at 0:18 to win the race.

Martin posted the day's best time early, as he was an early starter. The Columbia rider, however, was no threat to Voigt because he had lost seven minutes during the Stage 2 road race. Neither was Wiggins, who began the stage at 3:16 overall. Maxine Monfort (Cofidis), who began the stage at 0:12 overall, was a threat, and he rode a 10:23. Rabon began the day at 0:12 overall, and he posted a 10:13. Voigt, the day's last starter, knew what he had to do.

At the intermediate checkpoint, Voigt was tied with Danny Pate (Garmin). Rabon, however, was the rider whom he had to overtake. The German gained two seconds to gain the overall victory.

Voigt's overall win is his fifth in the Criterium International. He is tied with Raymond Poulidor for the greatest number of victories in this race. The Saxo Bank man does not intend to remain tied, however. "After five wins, I think I have found the recipe for this race," Voigt said. "See you next year!"

In the overall, Voigt beat Rabon by 0:02 and Pate by 0:09. These riders and others will soon race the classics. Who will prosper? Check in at www.roadcycling.com and find out!
