Ganna Powers to Win in Stage 1 ITT of Tirreno-Adriatico
Team Ineos-Grenadiers’ Italian National Time Trial Champion Filippo Ganna today proved the strongest man on the 11.5-kilometer flat stretch along the Lido di Camaiore shore. Lido di Camaiore is a popular Italian beach resort area that rose in popularity with the well-to-do in the mid-19th century and remains a popular tourist attraction in the summer months.
There was no time for brisk walks along the beach today, however, as the professional riders focused one hundred percent on stage one of the first prominent Italian one-week race of the 2023 season.
Ganna won the individual time trial stage in 00:12:28 and delivered an average speed of 55.348 km/h. Bora-Hansgrohe’s Lennard Kämna finished second, 28 seconds behind Ganna. Ganna’s American teammate Magnus Sheffield completed the podium 31 seconds behind the stage winner.
"I'm really happy with my amazing performance in today’s stage,” proud time trial winner Ganna told Roadcycling.com after being celebrated on the podium. “After our team won Strade Bianche with Tom Pidcock, we're ready for a great Tirreno-Adriatico. I’ve had a few second and third places since the beginning of the season, so winning today was very important for my morale, also when taking the coming Classics into account.”
Tuesday’s stage 2 of Tirreno-Adriatico will take the peloton further south along the coast in a 210-kilometer ride from Camaiore to Follonica.
