Baguet Wins Stage 2 of Andalucian Tour
Serge Baguet (Davitamon) has won Stage 2 of the Vuelta a Andalucia (Ruta del Sol). The Belgian took an uphill sprint from Leonardo Piepoli (Saunier Duval) to take the 166-km ride from Antequera to La Zubia-Alto Cumbres Verdes in 4:27:16. Johan Vansummeren (Davitamon) finished third at 0:03, and Carlos Garcia Quesada (Comunidad Valenciana) remains the overall leader.
As was the case in Stage 1, the racing was aggressive from the start. At 20 km, 17 riders escaped, but the bunch reeled them in within a few km. At 68 km, seven men sallied off of the front and ran up a five-minute lead by 112 km. Because Javier Ruiz de Larrinaga (Kaiku) became overall leader on the road, Comunidad Valenciana began to chase. The pursuit brought the field together, which set up the showdown on the finishing climb.
A lead group of a dozen riders formed on the ascent. Quesada began the hostilities, but Baguet had his measure. He took Piepoli with him, while Vansummeren and Quesada finished third and fourth at 0:03 and 0:07, respectively.
In the overall, Quesada leads Vansummeren by 0:36 and Francisco Cabello (Comunidad Valenciana) by 1:25. Stage 3 will be another tough ride. The 136.8-km run from Vegas de Genil to Jaen will feature two Category 3 ascents before the Category 1 Alto de Albanchez, with the Category 3 Alto de Torres (106 km) being the day?s final ascent. Will Quesada remain the race leader, or will another rider overtake him? Check in at Roadcycling.com and find out!
