After battling the cobbles and roads of the Tour of Flanders last weekend, Team Liquigas-Cannondale is getting ready to tackle the even tougher and certainly more uneven course offered by the Paris-Roubaix 2011 this coming Sunday, April 10.
The green-blue Liquigas line-up for the famous pavé classic will sports eight riders with Peter Sagan, Daniel Oss and Kristijan Koren as the captains. They will be joined by Davide Cimolai, Maciej Bodnar, Jacopo Guarnieri, Ted King and Alan Marangoni.
The team will be led by sports director Stefano Zanatta.
"We expect the Paris-Roubaix to be an extremely demanding race," Zanatta immediately said when the word Roubaix was introduced to him.
"But we've got the right spirit and determination to handle it. We've chosen a young team, like we did for the previous races in Belgium, which uses enthusiasm as one of its key strengths. They have all shown that they're eager to get the job done and possess a great capacity to handle the hardships. Let's hope we're luckier than in the Tour of Flanders."
When asked about the chance of a good result for Team Liquigas in the 2011 Paris-Roubaix, Zanatta emphasizes the Sagan-Oss-Koren trio.
"They're the ones who have shown the best ability on the Roubaix course. Peter is fine. He raced with courage and determination in Belgium (Tour of Flanders) and could do the same thing again on Sunday. Daniel has had a few days off to recuperate and regain his best form. He'll be putting in a powerful performance."
When asked what performance is to be expected from the final rider of the Liquigas lead trio, Zanatta told Roadcycling.com and Roadcycling.mobi "Kristijan (Koren) is an incredibly strong rider who has already completed the Paris-Roubaix and finished up there with the best in 2010. I expect to see even more signs of improvement. But the performance of the entire team in addition to these three will be important. For us it's all about team spirit and unity."
Team Liquigas-Cannondale will conduct a 70 kilometer reconnaissance ride later today. The training ride will include the new cobbled sections introduced by race organizer A.S.O. for this year's edition of the Paris-Roubaix. Zanatta will be on site to guide Sagan, Oss, Koren and Bodnar.
