Rabobank Wins Stage 1 Team Time Trial in 2011 Tirreno-Adriatico
Dutchman Lars Boom snatched the early overall lead in the 2011 Tirreno-Adriatico race when his Rabobank outfit won the opening team time trial earlier today.
Team Rabobank clocked a fastest time of 18 minutes and eight seconds over a 16.8 kilometer loop, beating a powerful Team Garmin-Cervelo by nine seconds on the edge of the Ligurian Sea on the Italian East coast.
"BAM!!!!!," Boom wrote on his Twitter feed minutes after being the first Rabobank rider to cross the line.
Tour de France contender Andy Schleck, despite the presence of teammate and three-time time trial world champion Fabian Cancellara, had to settle for seventh with his Leopard-Trek team, 29 seconds off the pace. There certainly wasn't much teamwork to be seen here.
Team Acqua & Sapone, the team of defending champion Stefano Garzelli, took 12th place.
The 2011 Tirreno-Adriatico race ends on Tuesday, four days before the first big classic of the season the 2011 Milano-San Remo - highlights from which you will be able to watch in the videos section right here on Roadcycling.com.
