CAS Guarantees Alberto Contador Case Ruling before Tour de France 2011

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) is confident it can make a ruling on Spaniard Alberto Contador's doping case before the 2011 edition of the legendary Tour de France race starts on July 2.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) is confident it can make a ruling on Spaniard Alberto Contador's doping case before the 2011 edition of the legendary Tour de France race starts on July 2.

The International Cycling Union (UCI) and World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) both appealed against the Spanish federation's decision to clear the triple Tour de France champion after testing positive for the banned anabolic agent clenbuterol during last year's Tour.

"The parties will now have the opportunity to file written submissions including all their arguments and evidence," CAS announced in a statement.

"The CAS secretary general has informed the parties that the CAS would be ready to establish a procedural calendar allowing for the settlement of the dispute before the end of June 2011," the CAS statement added.

28-year-old Contador was cleared by the RFEC, who had initially proposed a one-year ban, after he claimed the agent entered his system from a piece of contaminated meat consumed during one of the rest days.

If eventually found guilty, the Team Saxo Bank-SunGard rider faces a two-year ban and being stripped of his third Tour de France champion title.
