Angel Vicioso abandons Giro d'Italia 2013

Team Katusha's Spanish rider Angel Vicioso crashed heavily in the final part of yesterday's stage 9 of the 2013 Giro d’Italia.

Vicioso crashed on the final descent before the finish line in Firenze. He slid on the wet roads, fell on the left part of his body and rotated multiple times before hitting a wall. His helmet protected him during the impact. Despite of the trauma incurred, Vicioso heroically managed to finish the stage.

Vicioso is, however, forced to exit this year's Giro d’Italia.

Preliminary medical examination showed three broken ribs, wrist break and shoulder trauma on the left part and the cracking scapula and some other damages on the right side.

The recovery time and schedule for Vicioso remains unknown but is expected to be determined in the coming days.
