Geniez Climbs to Victory in Stage 15 of Vuelta

Alexandre Geniez (Francaise des Jeux) has won Stage 15 of the 2013 Vuelta a Espana. The Frenchman, one of two survivors of a daylong break, took the 224.9-km ride from Andorra to Peyragudes, France in 6:20:12. Scarponi, the other survivor, finished second at 3:03, and Nicolas Roche (Saxo Bank-Tinkoff) took third at 3:07. Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) finished fourth at 3:20 and remains the red jersey.

Ratto Climbs to Victory in Stage 15 of Vuelta; Nibali Keeps Red Jersey

On a day that saw his team captain bow out of the 2013 Vuelta a Espana because of hypothermia, Daniele Ratto (Cannondale) salvaged the race for his team. The Italian was the sole survivor of a daylong break in the cold and rain, winning Stage 14, a mountainous, 155.7-km ride from Baga, Spain to Collada de la Gallina, Andorra in 4:24:00. Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) finished second at 3:53, and Chris Horner (RadioShack-Leopard) took third at 3:55. Nibali has tightened his grip on the red jersey.

Gilbert Takes First Win as World Champion

With his world championship year about to end, Philippe Gilbert (BMC) has notched his first win. The world road race champion overtook Edvald Boasson Hagen (Sky) to win Stage 12 of the Vuelta a Espana. Gilbert took the rolling, 164.2-km ride from Maella to Tarragona in 4:03:44. Maximiliano Richeze (Lampre-Merida) finished third, and Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) remains the red jersey.

The four-time world time trial champion won Stage 11, the 2013 Vuelta’s only individual time trial, powering over the 38.8-km course in Tarazona in 51:00. Tony Martin (Omega Pharma-Quick Step), the reigning world time trial champion, finished second at 0:37, and Domenico Pozzovivo (Ag2r-La Mondiale) finished third at 1:24. Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) finished fourth at 1:25 and reclaimed the red jersey.
