David Zabriskie (U.S. Postal Service) has won Stage 11 of the Vuelta a Espana. The American time trial champion, whose career nearly ended when a sport utility vehicle ran him over last year, rode away from the peloton in the first five km of today?s 166.8-km ride from San Vicente Del Raspeig and stayed away to win in 4:05:31. Alessandro Petacchi (Fassa Bortolo) outsprinted Stuart O?Grady (Cofidis) for second at 1:11. Floyd Landis (U.S. Postal Service) remains the overall leader.

Zabriskie made the day?s first attack. He had created a small gap when Alejandro Valverde (Comunidad Valenciana-Kelme) crashed two km later. The peloton slowed while Valverde received a new bike and his injuries?road rash and bruises?were attended to. By 86 km, however, Zabriskie?s advantage had ballooned to 18:05.
Fassa Bortolo began to chase, and Cofidis joined the Italian squad. With 10 km left, Zabriskie?s lead was down to 4:00. The American kept a steady pace, and U.S. Postal Service assistant team director Dirk Demol radioed encouragement. Zabriskie stayed clear of the peloton.
In the overall, Landis leads Valverde by 0:09 and Francisco Mancebo (Illes Balears-Banesto) by 0:29. Tomorrow is the Vuelta?s first rest day, but Stage 12 will shake up the standings. The 145-km ride from Almeria to Observatorio Astronomico de Calar Alto will feature two Category 1 climbs and the Special Category ascent to the finish. Who will prevail? Roberto Heras (Liberty Seguros)? Valverde? Mancebo? Check in at www.roadcycling.com and find out!
