One break defined the day?s racing. Alain van Katwijk (Bankgiroloterij), Francesco Secchiari (Domina Vacanze), and Tony Bracke (Landbouwkrediet) escaped at one km and ran up a 10-minute lead before the bunch began to chase. As the peloton approached the break, Bracke soloed away from his companions, but all were caught with eight km left. The stage came down to a sprint, which van Heeswijk won.
In the overall, Heeswijk leads Chicchi and Bracke by 0:04. Stage 2 will be a 182.5-km run from Bolsward to Nijverdal. It is likely to end in a bunch sprint. Will van Heeswijk keep his lead? Check in at www.roadcycling.com and find out!
