Valverde Wins Stage 2 of Burgos Tour

Alejandro Valverde (Comunidad Valenciana) has won his second consecutive stage of the Vuelta a Burgos.

Alejandro Valderde (Comunidad Valenciana) has won his second consecutive stage of the Vuelta a Burgos. Valverde won Stage 1 with his climbing ability, but he took Stage 2, a relatively flat, 170-km run from Lerma to Aranda de Duero, by winning a bunch sprint. The Comunidad Valenciana rider bested Alexandre Usov (Phonak) and Jon Del Rio (Paternina) to win in 3:46:13. Valverde remains the overall leader.

At 40 km, the break of the day occurred. Fourteen riders sallied off of the front and forged a 4:30 lead before the peloton began to chase. By 125 km, the bunch had caught everyone except for Jurgen Van Goolen (Quick Step), Jurgen Van de Walle (Chocolade Jacques), and Luis Leon Sanchez (Liberty Seguros).

Saunier Duval and Illes Balears led the pursuit. Van Goolen attacked his companions, and Sanchez countered and dropped the Belgian. Behind, a crash took down Francisco Mancebo (Illes Balears), who abandoned with a broken hand but who should be able to ride the Vuelta a Espana. Sanchez led the field by about 0:40.

With 10 km left, Baque, LPR, Vlaanderen, and Saunier Duval went to the front to chase, while Liberty Seguros attempted to block. Gradually, the bunch reeled in the break. The peloton accelerated when a Euskaltel man sortied with two km left. The bunch snared him with one km left and Sanchez with half of that distance remaining. Valverde burst from the field for the win.

In the overall, Valverde leads Miguel Perdiguero (Saunier Duval) and Denis Menchov (Illes Balears) by 0:03. Stage 3 will probably decide the race. The 139-km ride from Areniscas de los Pinares to Laguna de Neila will feature the Category 1 Alto del Collado and the special category finishing climb. Will Valverde keep his lead?
