Valverde Takes Early Lead in Burgos Tour

Alejandro Valverde (Comunidad Valenciana) has taken the early lead in the Vuelta a Burgos, a tuneup race for the Vuelta a Espana.

Alejandro Valverde (Comunidad Valenciana) has taken the early lead in the Vuelta a Burgos, a tuneup race for the Vuelta a Espana. Valverde rode away from 10 companions to win the 149-km run from Burgos to Poza de la Sal in 3:34:35. Denis Menchov (Illes Balears) outsprinted Mauricio Albert Ardila (Chocolade Jacques) for second at 0:03.

Moises Duenas and Marco Fertonani (Phonak) made the break of the day. They rolled off the front at 30 km and led by more than 7:00 at 83 km. Saunier Duval and Illes Balears took up the chase, and Chocolade Jacques and Cafes Baque took over with 16 km left and 1:44 separating the bunch from the break.

Liberty Seguros took over at the front. The tempo sent many riders sliding out of the back. Valverde attacked, and Leonardo Piepoli (Saunier Duval) followed. Vladimir Karpets (Illes Balears) led eight riders to the pair.

Jonathan Gonzalez (Paternina) attacked, and Valverde followed. Juan Carlos Dominguez, Piepoli, and Miguel Perdiguero (all from Saunier Duval) led the pursuit, and the lead group was together going into the last km. With 200 m to go, however, Valverde surged and none of his companions had an answer.

In the overall, Valverde leads Menchov and Ardila by 0:03. Stage 2 will not change this state of affairs. The 170-km run from Lerma to Aranda de Duero will feature two Category 3 climbs, so the field should stay together. Who will win the stage? Check in at www.roadcycling.com and find out!
