Santiago Perez (Phonak) has won Stage 14 of the Vuelta a Espana. The Spaniard attacked on the Category 1 Alto de Monachil and held on to win the mountainous, 167-km ride from Malaga to Granada in 4:06:34. Alejandro Valverde (Comunidad Valenciana-Kelme) outsprinted Luis Perez (Cofidis) for second at 0:46. Roberto Heras (Liberty Seguros) remains the overall leader.

From the start, the racing was aggressive. After a number of abortive sallies, 15 men escaped. The peloton kept the fugitives on a short leash, and their lead maxed out at 3:00. The bunch reeled in the break at the base of the Alto de Monachil.
Three km from the summit. Perez struck. Carlos Sastre (CSC) led the pursuit, but Perez had a 33-second lead on a chase group when he breasted the climb. On the descent, the Spaniard added to that lead en route to the win.
In the overall, Heras leads Francisco Mancebo (Illes Balears-Banesto) by 0:35 and Alejandro Valverde (Comunidad Valenciana-Kelme) by 0:49. Stage 15 will be an important one. The 29.6-km mountain time trial should see riders such as Heras, Mancebo, and Valverde excel. Which one of these riders will win? Check in at www.roadcycling.com and find out!
