Landis rides himself into Tour annals

Floyd Landis ? avec panache!

forever gulping water and showering himself with bottles handed to him by the hovering Phonak car.

But races are not won on water. Landis showed today that he is capable of the emotion and inner strength that have driven the greatest Tour champions ? Garin, Thys, Christophe, Bobet, Coppi, Merckx, and Armstrong.

All these riders, and now including Landis, demonstrated a quality described as jump by the late, renowned French cultural historian Roland Barthes in a pioneering essay on the Tour published in the 1950s.

Barthes said jump was ?a veritable electric influx which erratically possesses certain racers beloved of the gods and then causes them to accomplish supernatural feats.?

Floyd Landis was so possessed today, and in the process rode himself into a very select place in the annals of the Tour de France.
