Hushovd Wins Stage 1 of Dauphine Libere

Thor Hushovd (Credit Agricole) has won Stage 1 of the Dauphine Libere.

Thor Hushovd (Credit Agricole) has won Stage 1 of the Dauphine Libere. The Norwegian bested Robert Hunter (Phonak) and Juan Antonio Flecha (Fassa Bortolo) in a bunch sprint to win the rolling, 224-km run from Aix-les-Bains to Givors in 5:10:55. George Hincapie (Discovery Channel) remains the overall leader. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /?>

From the start, the racing was aggressive. After a couple of abortive attacks, Francis Mourey (La Francaise des Jeux), Jose Garcia Acosta (Illes Balears), Sylvain Chavanel (Cofidis), and Oscar Mason (Liquigas) rolled away from the peloton. At 50 km, the quartet had a 1:30 lead on the bunch. Eventually, Koos Moerenhout (Davitamon) and Andriy Grivko (Domina Vacanze) bridged up to the leaders.

Discovery Channel pegged the break at 5:50. With 60 km left, the American squad raised the tempo, and the break?s advantage fell below 4:00. Ten km later, Credit Agricole joined Discovery Channel at the front. With four km left, the bunch reeled in the break. The stage came down to a sprint, which Hushovd won.

In the overall, Hincapie leads Levi Leipheimer (Gerolsteiner) by 0:01 and Andrei Kashechkin (Credit Agricole) by 0:03. Stage 2 will probably not change this state of affairs. The rolling, 187-km run from Givors to Chaufailles should end in a bunch sprint. Who will take it? Check in at http://www.roadcycling.com/ and find out!
