Garzelli Wins Stage 3 of Giro

Stefano Garzelli (Vini Caldirola) has won Stage 3 of the Giro.

Stefano Garzelli (Vini Caldirola) has won Stage 3 of the Giro. The Italian won an uphill sprint to take the 145-km ride from Policoro to Terme Luigiane in 3:34:38. Francesco Casagrande (Lampre) outsprinted Alessandro Petacchi (Fassa Bortolo), the maglia rosa, for second at 0:02.

From the start, the pace was fast. Alessio rode down an early break, but Hernan Munoz (Selle Italia) entered a break that set up teammate John Fredy Gonzalez's move at the summit of the Category 2 ascent at Fagnano Castello (100 km) that gave him enough mountain points to keep his King of the Mountains jersey.

Domina Vacanze and Panaria rode hard tempo to head off other attacks and to catch Munoz's break. With 13 km left, Robbie McEwen (Lotto) attacked, but he did not put more than 0:15 between himself and the field before the Fassa Bortolo-led peloton caught him with five km remaining.

Fassa Bortolo led the charge into Terme Luigiane, but Domina Vacanze led out Gabriele Colombo. The Italian faded, and Garzelli took over. With 400 m remaining, the Vini Caldirola rider made a surge that no one could match to win the stage.

In the overall, Petacchi leads Garzelli by 0:17 and Casagrande by 0:27. Stage 4 will be basically flat but with a climb leading to a downhill finish. Who will win? McEwen? Petacchi? Cipollini? Check in at http://www.roadcycling.com/ and find out!
