Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team Report

Contador wins Paris-Nice and claims ProTour lead.

Alberto Contador claimed overall victory on Sunday at the Paris-Nice stage race as his Discovery Channel teammates fought an incredible battle to gain back a mere six seconds from race leader Davide Rebellin.   The team, showing extreme focus and motivation, rallied around their Spanish team leader with the confidence that their hard work would pay off. Contador did not disappoint. The 24-year-old Spaniard soloed to his second victory of the week on Sunday, the Team?s third, and the biggest overall victory of his young career.

Dirk Demol, Team Sports Director at Paris-Nice was jubilant over the win commenting, ?It was our plan to have Alberto attack on the final climb but it was a long way from the finish when he went. You never know what can happen.   He only needed six seconds but when 10 guys are chasing on it?s not so easy. Our guys were amazing all week and today they made everybody before Alberto launched his attack. It was amazing to see him fly up the mountain the way he did.?

Contador?s victory at Paris-Nice also gives him the designation as the leader of the UCI Pro Tour, the sports elite racing circuit. Contador will wear a special white jersey denoting him as Pro Tour leader.

Johan Bruyneel stated, ?Our Team was able to come into 2007 very focused with our first year without Lance behind us. We have new riders, new goals and new objectives and I could not be happier with the how the guys have performed so far. The Tour of California and Paris-Nice wins were a direct result of our guys riding as a team behind their leader. Alberto pointing at the ?Discovery Channel? on his jersey as he won yesterday was his way of thanking his teammates and showing how happy he is on this team. This was a tremendous win for our entire organization. Winning races can only help us as we look to solidify a new title sponsor for 2008.?
