From the start, the pace was fast. At 55 km, Rik Reinerink (Skil) escaped. At about 80 km, Matthe Pronk (Unibet.com) and Koen Barbe (Chocolade Jacques) joined him. At 140 km, the escapees led the field by 5:45.

T-Mobile, Rabobank, Gerolsteiner, and Davitamon began to chase. The break never had a chance and was scooped up with 12 km left. A few counterattacks occurred, but Quick Step assumed command at the front and reeled them in. With 160 m remaining, Boonen lunged into the lead.

In the overall, Boonen leads Stefan Schumacher (Gerolsteiner) by 0:04 and George Hincapie (Discovery Channel) by 0:07. Stage 2 should see Boonen win again. A bunch sprint should decide the flat, 195-km run from ?s Hertogenbosch to Sittard-Geelen. Check in at http://www.roadcycling.com/ to see how the stage turns out!
