Menchov Won’t Defend Giro d'Italia Title

Lance Armstrong, Alberto Contador, Mark Cavendish among absentees; Carlos Sastre, Cadel Evans, Pellizotti on provisional list.

As expected, Giro d'Italia defending champion Denis Menchov is not on a preliminary list of riders for the 2010 Giro d'Italia.

Menchov, a Russian with the Rabobank team, has said he plans to focus on the Tour de France.

Runner-up Danilo Di Luca also will not take part in the race. He is serving a two-year ban for using the advanced blood-booster CERA last year.

Also missing are Lance Armstrong, Alberto Contador and British sprinter Mark Cavendish.

Franco Pellizotti finished third last year and Carlos Sastre was fourth. Both are entered.

Teams are allowed to list 15 riders, from which they will choose nine to race.

Other top riders listed included Cadel Evans, Alexandre Vinokourov and former champions Stefano Garzelli, Ivan Basso and Damiano Cunego.
