Jack Bauer Wins Stage 2 of 2011 Tour of Utah

New Zealand's Jack Bauer won the second stage of the Tour of Utah of Thursday, while Colombia's Sergio Henao overcame a late crash to retain the overall lead.

New Zealand's Jack Bauer won the second stage of the Tour of Utah of Thursday, while Colombia's Sergio Henao overcame a late crash to retain the overall lead.

Bauer finished the 100.7-mile stage that started in Lehi and wound around Utah Lake in 3 hours, 33 minutes, 43 seconds. Italian rider Elia Viviani was second, and American Jake Keough third.

Henao had a 7-second lead over Spain's Oscar Sevilla with three stages left. Montana star Levi Leipheimer was third, 13 seconds back, and fellow U.S. rider Jesse Anthony was fourth, 18 second behind. Slovakia's Janez Brajkovic completed the five-man lead group, 21 seconds behind Henao.

Henao won the prologue Tuesday and finished second behind Anthony on Wednesday in the 113.6-mile first stage that climbed three times over north Ogden pass in the Wasatch Mountains.

On Thursday, Bauer broke away from the pack about 500 meters and sprinted to the finish.

"Obviously, a stage win was a goal," said Bauer, competing for Team Endura Racing. "To do it so early in the tour and on a sprint stage is awesome."

Montana rider Tejay Van Garderen appeared to be in position to win the stage after taking a 12-second lead into the final 5 kilometers, but he fell back into the pack at the final corner.

"The sprinters' teams got organized," said Van Garderen, coming off a strong showing in the Tour de France. "If it's one guy against nine, then you can't really do much."

Van Garderen was seventh overall, 2:46 behind Henao.

On Friday, the riders will compete in an individual time trial at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele.
