2011 Rudy Project Rydon Sunglasses Review
Roadcycling.com's Dave Osborne reviews the Rudy Project Rydon sunglasses featuring the color-changing photocromic lenses.
Function and style have always been characteristics of Rudy Project sunglasses. The Rydon is no exception.
The matte black frames were subtle yet the "fluo" insert on the temples boldly announced your presence. There is an obvious reduction in mass with the Rydon, which equates to a nearly featherweight sunglass. As with all Rudy project sunglasses, personalized comfort and fit is obtained through infinite adjustments. The nose piece and temples can be moved in, out, up, and down just like the hokey pokey! Internally, this movement is supported by the skeletal alloys that are strong and light.
My Rydon's came with the clear Impact X photochromic lenses. Impact X lenses are worry free eye protection with their lifetime guarantee against breakage. Bring on the bugs and rocks as they won't penetrate or crack your lenses. The photochromic properties work liked magic. The clear lens will turn nearly black in bright sunlight and every shade of gray amidst cloud cover. Indoors, they are clear. Inside or out, you could read a text message on your cell phone. During my rides, I experienced the entire gamut of light conditions and the transition of the lenses wasn't noticeable. It really worked like magic.
The Rydon has answered my prayers in one important aspect. There is no pain or discomfort from the helmet pushing my ear against the bow of the sunglass. Thankfully, Rudy Project designers put some thought into a slimmed down bow. I also wore my Rydon's while wearing my motorcycle helmet which is much snugger than a bicycle helmet. Again, there was no ache due to my ear being pressed between the helmet and the bows.
The lenses have enough wrap around to protect your eyes while the rubberized nose piece prevented the glasses from sliding down even in the tuck position. While in the drops and looking up, the top of the frame was in your vision. Other than that, the Rydon was essentially unnoticeable and didn't require repositioning. I soon forgot I was wearing them.
The lightweight Rydon has instantly become my favorite sunglass. Rain or shine, inside or out, wearing them has become a constant. They are the 24/7 - 365 glasses to wear!
Rudy Project is thoughtful in their design of eyewear and it works in real world applications. It's easy to understand why the Rydon sunglass is their number one seller.
